APPROACHING OBLIVION
Edgeworks Abbey Archive Trade Paperback [Road Sign Proof]
The collection’s subtitle suggested a road sign, so I researched the font and colors used by the U.S. highway system for this temporary cover. The font and color scheme would survive to the finished volume, but I later added a number of pieces that were not in this first test printing: “Dostoevsky Never Wrote for Tony Either…”, “Ellison Speaks…” (a very last-minute discovery), and “Breaking and Entering Pandora’s box. My essay was not yet written when this proof was printed. This volume features a NOT FOR SALE banner across the cover.

GENTLEMAN JUNKIE AND OTHER STORIES OF THE HUNG-UP GENERATION
Edgeworks Abbey Archive Trade Paperback [Text-on-cover Proof]
As is evident with the hardcovers and paperbacks of THE DEADLY STREETS and CHILDREN OF THE STREETS, an original element of the Edgeworks Abbey Archive design was text on paperback covers but only art on the hardcovers. The first paperback proof of GENTLEMAN JUNKIE upheld this convention, but the title seemed to crowd Harlan’s 1960 self-portrait, and the concept was dropped. My essay had not been finished and is missing and there are a number of cosmetic and layout differences. This early printing features Harlan’s tribute to Frank Robinson, which was dropped after I was reminded it was incorporated into the new introduction to ELLISON WONDERLAND. It also lacks the two VILLAGE VOICE essays added to replace the Robinson piece and “The Hangman with the Turquoise Eyes”, which was moved from NO DOORS, NO WINDOWS when I realized it was the only Rogue story missing from Junkie. This volume features a NOT FOR SALE banner across the cover.

LOVE AIN’T NOTHING BUT SEX MISSPELLED
